Acrylic Paint Markers vs. Permanent and Chalk Markers

With so many markers available out there, it can be hard to pick the right type for your project. This quick guide will help you differentiate between acrylic paint markers, permanent markers, and chalk markers — three of the most popular writing instruments today.

Similar to permanent markers, acrylic paint pens dry to an opaque, water-resistant finish. They both work on a wide variety of surfaces, and are both suitable for labeling, drawing, calligraphy, and other projects. However, permanent markers dry almost instantaneously, giving you no time to correct errors. Paint markers dry a little slower, so you can still make changes to your artwork on a non-porous surface.

Chalk markers, on the other hand, are more like whiteboard markers. They’re erasable on glass, windows, and other sealed surfaces, and are ideal for sign-making or general craft use. They’re also water-based, so they’ll wash right off little hands and fingers!

The right marker to use largely depends on your project. If you want a lasting finish, go with permanent or acrylic markers. But if you’re set on creating window art or signs, chalk markers are your best bet.
